Murder Mystery Date Night Ideas for Two

Most murder mystery games are built for a crowd. Here are five ways to play with just the two of you.

In short

A murder mystery date night sounds perfect until you read the box and find it needs eight guests and a script. The good news is that plenty of mysteries work for two, from a board game on the sofa to a case file you solve over dinner. Check the player count before you buy anything, because it changes from game to game and edition to edition.

Play the classic: Clue

Clue was devised in 1943 by British designer Anthony E. Pratt, and it is sold as Cluedo in the UK and Clue in North America. Players work out who committed the murder, where, and with which weapon, by making suggestions and privately showing each other cards that disprove them. Some editions need three players, so check the box before you plan a duel for two. A small house rule keeps it fun: whoever makes the wrong accusation picks the dessert.

Open a case file box

Hunt A Killer says it began in 2016, and its boxes put you in the role of a detective. You go through props such as notes, newspaper clippings and photographs, decide which suspects to rule out, and work towards the killer. Games come in different lengths and for different numbers of players, so look for one that lists two. Take turns reading the evidence aloud and you each get a job. Some of the props are designed to look like real crime scene material, so check the box if that bothers either of you.

Escape the room from your sofa

EXIT: The Game, published by Kosmos, is an escape room in a box. You solve puzzles together to open the locked door in the story, and each scenario has its own theme. Reviews describe it as taking about an hour to an hour and a half, for one to six players, and working best with two or three. You write on and tear up the materials as you play, so each box is a one-time game. It is a great test of teamwork, and you learn quickly how each of you handles a ticking clock.

Borrow a party kit and bring friends

Murder mystery party games usually seat anywhere from six to twenty people, with each guest playing a character who holds secret clues. That is too many for a date, but it makes a lively double date or a small group night once you know each other a little better. Some kits are scripted, with everyone reading from a booklet around the table, and others are interactive, where you mingle and question each other, so pick the style that suits your crowd.

Cook the clues

Turn the evening into a dinner. Keep the food simple, such as appetizers and a main you can plate in advance, so neither of you is stuck in the kitchen while the mystery waits. Soft lamps and candles set the mood, and a playlist of old film scores does the rest. Dress as your favourite detective if you are feeling brave.

How to make it a good date

Ask what kind of mystery your date likes before you pick one. Choose a game that works for two players and has a clear ending, so the night does not drag. Cooperative games are friendlier for a first date, and competitive ones are more fun once you know each other. Keep the mood playful, and let the loser pick the dessert.
